How does laser engraving work?

The laser engraver is one of the incredible innovations. Laser engraving is a process of generating permanent contrast on a surface. This, in turn, can be made of metal, plastic, wood, paper, glass, and various other solid elements.

Looking from the side of the engraving process you can easily differentiate the laser engraving process from the engraving process.

Engraving is a process similar to engraving, but it removes material and, therefore, the engraving is low relief. While surface laser engravings have a much finer finish and therefore more detail.

In laser engraving, the laser beam removes material so as to create a cavity with various surface structures called laser engraving. Many materials can be laser engraved. During laser engraving of metals, for example, rough structures that appear to be black structures and smooth structures that appear to be white are formed.

The laser machine is often used in the automotive or electromechanical industry. Also, in Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Tooling, laser engraving is often used to make deep markings and engravings.

How is the laser engraving production process done?

In laser engraving, the marking is imprinted by combined melting and evaporation. The power density of the laser beam is so high that the material melts during the process and is partially evaporated. 

A cavity is formed in the material: laser engraver machine. Typical engraving depth is 10 to 50 µm. With the vapor pressure of the material to be evaporated, the molten mass is expelled to the edge and, with cooling, solidifies as a melting flash. 

The engraving is U-shaped and becomes increasingly narrow as the laser penetrates the material, as the molten mass cannot be completely expelled. The heat power enters locally through the small laser spot and is strongly limited in time due to the extremely short duration of the pulses.

The precise, non-contact laser tool brings a number of advantages when removing and therefore engraving a material. With pulse repetition frequencies and pulse durations that can be flexibly selected, every laser engraving is individually adjustable, on any material and any desired quality.

Fast:

Despite the increased depth of penetration into the material, due to the high repetition rates and therefore the short cycle times, the laser engraver machine is a faster method compared to temper marking.

Wear resistant:

With the resulting cavity in the material by laser machine, the marking is extremely robust against external influences.

Preserver:

Thanks to localized heat output, for example, even temperature-sensitive sensors or electronic chips can be marked.

Reproducible:

Because the laser power can be specifically controlled, the marking results are always accurate and repeatable.
